Overview

Commissioned by Scripps Research to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Skaggs Family Foundation’s foundational gift, this portrait of L.S. “Sam” Skaggs was developed as part of a broader institutional milestone celebration. The work honors both Sam Skaggs and his wife, Aline, whose vision and sustained generosity helped establish the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology and advance Scripps Research’s global leadership in biomedical science.

Installed in the atrium lobby of the Beckman Building in La Jolla, the sculpture stands as a lasting expression of gratitude and a visible affirmation of the Skaggs family’s ongoing commitment to scientific advancement.

Created at approximately 1.3 times life-size, the portrait was developed through a structured review process with institutional leadership to ensure both a faithful likeness and an appropriate architectural presence. The stainless steel surface reflects light within the atrium while maintaining a restrained, contemporary, enduring character appropriate to the site.

The unveiling took place during an anniversary celebration recognizing the Skaggs family’s ongoing relationship with Scripps Research. Members of the Skaggs family and institutional leadership were present.
