Overview

Shonda Rhimes is among the most influential television creators of her generation — a writer and producer whose work has reshaped contemporary storytelling and expanded representation within the industry. Inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2017, her career continues to shape global audiences through Shondaland and ongoing creative leadership.

In 2022, the Television Academy commissioned this bronze portrait to formally recognize her induction within the Hall of Fame installation at its North Hollywood campus. The sculpture was unveiled during the Academy’s 26th Hall of Fame ceremony.

Conceived as a permanent presence within the Academy’s collection, the portrait reflects not only career achievement, but sustained creative authority and cultural impact.

Development

As is often the case with highly scheduled or posthumous subjects, Rhimes’ portrait was developed without an in-person sitting. Becker has found that trusted long-term colleagues, friends, or family members often provide invaluable perspective — offering insight into expression, temperament, and the subtle qualities that make a likeness feel fully present.

For this commission, Becker collaborated closely with the Television Academy and members of the Shondaland team, including her sister, Sandie Bailey. Reference photography and target expressions were refined through ongoing correspondence. To support structural precision, Becker provided a measurement kit — including calipers and anatomical diagrams typically used in live sittings — allowing key proportions to be documented and incorporated into the sculpt.

Likeness was approached as a study of nuance: proportion, asymmetry, and subtle variation. From that foundation, the portrait focuses on conveying presence — clarity, creative authority, and forward momentum.

PERSONAL DETAIL

Shonda's “S” necklace was incorporated into the composition, providing a subtle personal reference within the work.
