James C. Flood

Flood Building, San Francisco

James C. Flood bronze portrait bust installed in architectural niche, San Francisco

Overview

Commissioned by the Flood family, this bronze portrait honors James C. Flood and marks the continuation of a multigenerational legacy within the historic Flood Building in San Francisco.

Installed in the building’s central architectural niche, the sculpture joins earlier portraits of his father and grandfather, creating a three-generation lineage within the structure they built and stewarded. The work was conceived as both a personal tribute and a civic gesture—acknowledging leadership, continuity, and responsibility across generations.

Context

The Flood Building, completed in 1904, is one of the few major structures in downtown San Francisco to survive the 1906 earthquake. For more than a century it has remained under family ownership, enduring world wars, economic shifts, and civic transformation.

The placement of the bust within the original marble niche reinforces that continuity. Rather than introducing a new commemorative space, the sculpture extends an existing architectural narrative.

The Sculpture

Cast in bronze at slightly over life-size, the portrait was developed through an iterative digital sculpting process. Working closely with the Flood family, Becker reviewed archival photographs and video, refining the likeness through a series of remote consultations to establish not only physical accuracy, but the temperament and presence that most authentically reflected Jim.

Particular attention was given to expression, posture, and quiet composure. The final scale and presentation were calibrated to harmonize with the historic niche and the adjacent family portraits, ensuring visual coherence within the architectural setting.

Unveiling

The sculpture was unveiled in a private ceremony attended by members of the Flood family and invited guests. The installation marked not only the placement of a new portrait, but the affirmation of a lineage embedded within the building itself.
