Overview

This bronze portrait of Ron Howard was commissioned by the Television Academy for its Hall of Fame Sculpture Garden at the Academy’s North Hollywood headquarters, home of the Emmy Awards.

Howard’s career spans more than five decades as an actor, director, and producer. The portrait recognizes his enduring contributions to television and film and his role as a creative force behind the camera.

Context

Becker met with Howard at Imagine Entertainment in Beverly Hills together with Television Academy sculpture committee chair Phil Wayne to discuss the tone and character of the portrait.

Howard expressed a preference for a natural, engaged expression. As a storyteller and director working behind the camera, he wanted the portrait to suggest a thoughtful presence — someone immersed in the creative process.

During the meeting Howard shared reference photographs, identifying subtle expressions he felt reflected his personality while avoiding overly pronounced smiles. Becker also gathered anatomical measurements and reference photography.

Howard also contributed a personal detail to the reference process: a cap with the bill shaped in his characteristic style, which he provided as a model for the sculpture.

The Sculpture

Cast in bronze at slightly over life-size, the portrait emphasizes Howard’s thoughtful expression and relaxed posture.

The composition reflects his role as a filmmaker and creative collaborator — attentive, analytical, and engaged with the process of storytelling. The sculpture aims to capture a sense of presence consistent with Howard’s reputation as a director working closely with actors and crews behind the camera.

Additional reference materials were developed through direct photography and anatomical measurements taken during the Beverly Hills meeting.

Three bronze casts were produced: one installed in the Television Academy’s Hall of Fame Sculpture Garden, one for Disney in Florida, and one retained by the Howard family.
