August 7 – October 31
National Sculpture Society 77th Annual Awards Exhibition (Noble and Jennewein Galleries)
The National Sculpture Society 77th Annual Awards Exhibition will be held exclusively at Brookgreen Gardens from August 7 to October 31, 2010. The venue length has been expanded to nearly three months in order to provide greater exposure for this important exhibition of sculpture by significant artists of today. The awards of the National Sculpture Society will be presented along with Brookgreen Gardens’ People’s Choice Award at the closing celebration on October 30.

I am really happy with this new patina. I did quite a bit of experimenting for this monument. I am really pleased with the results — an old-world bronze blueish hue with some more contemporary brightness and opacity that lets the form and expression show thru. Thanks to Sculpt Nouveau for the special blending and to Rafael G that master patineur.

National City Council commissioned this bronze sculpture for the City’s new Fire Station and Headquarters at the corner of 16th Street and D Avenue. The work honors the past, present and future Firefighters of the NCFD whose rich history began in 1887. The monumental bronze was developed over a year and a half with input from Firefighters and the National City Art Committee.

This was an honor and a lot of fun. Working with the Firefighters and the people of National City.

Rain was too heavy to make the trip to the foundry in LA, so next week.
The Veterans and the SD Airport are discussing a possible display of the POW Liberation bronze. Here is the file to learn a bit more about the monument.

I’ve added two more concepts.

Concept B is another cylindrical form with stone veneer that is consistent with the architectural features in the area. This base’s longevity would be similar to the surrounding materials.
Concept C explores a more irregular plinth. More chaotic, more facets, more directions — some symbolism here. Would need to be all granite or concrete.

Met with Abe Shragge yesterday at the San Diego Veterans Museum.
I gave them the slips of paper the veterans filled out for me, describing what it felt like to be liberated from a prisoner of war camp. The museum will keep these historical documents, which are very powerful. I can only imagine what it would be like to be imprisoned, starved, brutilized and then be freed.

If the sculpture can fit thru the doors, and all the approvals happen, the Vets will unveil “Liberation” (sans base) Saturday, Feb 27th at this beautiful museum in Balboa Park, San Diego. Later it will be moved to the new Cemetery, under construction.
